Fallout: New Vegas is the latest installment to Obsidian Entertainment’s popular post-apocalyptic role-playing series, bringing the action to Las Vegas and the Mojave Desert.

Sometimes after a long day of gunning down real and imaginary friends and trying to solve some of virtual life’s mysteries, a player wants to take a break to wager, socialize, and hopefully make some money winning at blackjack. The developers at Obidian clearly decided gamblers shouldn’t need a separate game for that.

Fallout: New Vegas takes players to Sin City of 2281. Despite a nuclear war devastating the United States, Las Vegas was not directly struck. The buildings are intact and mutations are negligible. Now various factions compete for power.

Somehow bottle-caps have become an accepted and coveted currency. Gamers who enjoy gambling and have collected at least 2,000 caps can take their money to one of several casinos and exchange the caps for chips which can be used to play blackjack, slots, and roulette.

These games function much like real life, but in this role playing game, characters have a “Luck” status. Players who have more luck will have a greater chance of drawing 10’s, Aces, and face cards when they play blackjack. While slots seem to remain random, a player with more Luck will still somehow win more often. For roulette, luck also affects the probability of the ball stopping on your number or color. Players must have at least 5 Luck points for this feature to kick in.

Currently, players can only gamble for imaginary in-game currency. However, Fallout: New Vegas, like many modern games allows third party mods. It is only a matter of time before an innovative online blackjack casino developer such as Microgaming takes the initiative to develop a plug-in so you can play for real money instead of imaginary bottle caps. We’ll let you know the moment we find it.

Rules

All casinos in New Vegas use the following rules.

  • Maximum bet is 200 chips.
  • The game is dealt from multiple decks, which are shuffled after every hand.
  • The player may not purchase insurance.
  • Late surrender is offered on any hand.
  • Blackjack payouts and surrendered bets are rounded up.
  • The player 'double for less', and the player may not re-buy mid-hand.
  • The player may only split to two hands.
  • The player may only split identical card values (that is, the player may not split Queen-King).
  • A card is dealt to the second hand of a split before the player is allowed to act on the first.
  • The player may only double the first of two split hands (X360 - it grays out the double down option, but you can still do it on either hand).
  • The player may draw to the second of two split hands before drawing to the first.

House rules

Each casino has its own rules regarding blackjack payouts and when the dealer must draw. The rules can be seen on the table felts in each casino floor.

Barring variations from Luck, the best odds are found at The Tops, Ultra-Luxe, or Sierra Madre Casino. The worst odds are found at the Atomic Wrangler.

Atomic Wrangler (Freeside)

  • Blackjack pays 6 to 5.
  • Dealer must draw to 16, and stand on all 17's.

Gomorrah (The Strip)

  • Blackjack pays 3 to 2.
  • Dealer must hit soft 17.

The Tops (The Strip)

  • Blackjack pays 3 to 2.
  • Dealer must draw to 16, and stand on all 17's.

Ultra-Luxe (The Strip)

New Vegas Blackjack
  • Blackjack pays 3 to 2.
  • Dealer must draw to 16, and stand on all 17's.

Vikki and Vance Casino (Primm)

  • Blackjack pays 3 to 2.
  • Dealer must hit soft 17.

Sierra Madre Casino (Sierra Madre)

  • Blackjack pays 3 to 2.
  • Dealer must draw to 16, and stand on all 17's.

Notes

  • Only the dealer and player hands are shown, even if other gambling non-player characters are present at the table.
  • Blackjack is the safest of the three casino games, being relatively easy to win with only basic knowledge of the game and decent Luck. A Luck of 8 is usually sufficient to win the majority of hands you are dealt.
  • When the dealer is passing out the cards, their first card is dealt from the middle.
  • If textures are not set to high, it can be difficult to tell which cards were dealt.
  • If playing with a fullscreen aspect ratio, the HUD displaying your current bet, chips, and earnings will cover up your cards, making it difficult to determine the value of your hand.
  • If you try to cheat the system by loading after a loss, the dealer will take a minute to 'change out the deck' before you can continue playing.
  • Though the description of Luck states that a high Luck slightly increases your chances at the casinos, the difference is actually quite significant. For a Courier with Luck of 8 or more, it is possible to get banned from each casino in the game with fewer than a dozen total losses. At 10 Luck, 9 times out of 10, hitting on 20 will draw the Ace.
  • The 3 of Hearts in Gomorrah is missing a heart.
